The literary output and musical publications of Viktoras Kažinskis

Summary/Abstract: The theme of this article adds to a couple of previous publications discussing the creative work and output of Viktoras Kažinskis (Wiktor Każyński, 1812-67; see Menotyra, 1998, No. 4; 2000, No. 3), a musician who was born and spent most of his lifetime in Vilnius. Kazinskis' major publications such as his book "Muzikinės kelionės po Vokietiją 1844 metais užrašai" ("Notes on a musical journey throughout Germany in 1844", 1845), a comprehensive historical research "Žvilgsnis į italų draminę muziką" ("A Glance at Italian Drama Music", 1846), two large-scale articles "Palestrina" (1846), "Dykuma. Félicieno Davido odė - simfonija" ("Desert. Félicien David's Ode-Symphony", 1846) and others reveal a considerable literary talent and musicological insight of their author. Moreover, they characterize him as an artist whose judgment, though sometimes on the verge of emotional flatliness, was fairly grounded on solid aesthetic principles. This was a typical instance of the 19th-century musical aesthetics and polemical thought. Historical themes and urgent issues of the time Kazinskis dealt with and the way these matters were approached and assessed in his writings represent an important contribution to the 19th-century European musical literature and criticism. The historical value of Kazinskis' publications is undisputed: they represent a significant period of Lithuanian music history.
