Cluster policy and cluster initiatives in European Union

Summary/Abstract: Clusters are a striking feature of almost every contemporary national and regional economy. During the last two decades the European Union (EU) directed its energies to creation of competitive economy, creation of economy based on knowledge and innovation, sustainable and inclusive growth. Clusters and their development are important factor for the achievement of the goals of EU. They take key position in the industrial policy of EU as well as in the regional policy and scientific research. This paper attempts to clarify the clusters policy of EU and to point out and analyse the applied EU tools in support of cluster`s development. The applied tools are investigated in their both dimensions: financial and nonfinancial. The main conclusions are related with the fact that the applied EU initiatives are important tool which the policymakers in EU should continue to apply in the future but significant further steps are needed to improve their impact.
