Summary/Abstract: The gnomic saying γνῶθι σεαυτόν and its use as a foundation for a good life are the basic principles on which Ján Weber, a renowned pharmacologist, doctor and mayor of Prešov, builds on in the prologue to the Lectio principium (1665), his Handbook on political thinking. The aim of the paper is to show to what extent, the author draws on the examples inherited from the Antiquity.
