Research of Pronunciation in Czech Television: Slavic Anthroponyms

Summary/Abstract: This article analyzes semi-structured interviews conducted during field research in Czech Television. The focus was on pronunciation of loanwords and foreign proper names, particularly on words of Slavic origin (Russian, Polish, Serbian, Belarusian, and Czech). The analyzed data were classified into eight principles of phonological adaptation of loanwords. The results showed that respondents (employees of Czech Television) most frequently turn to the principle of phonological approximation, which means that they pronounce proper foreign names based on the pronunciation in the language of origin, but they draw on the repertoire of target language consonants and vowels, e.g. Zimonjić [zɪmoɲɪʧ]. Another significant principle of pronunciation is orthographic pronunciation based primarily on the written form of the word, e.g. Jeremenko [jɛrɛmɛŋko]. The respondents also mentioned that their pronunciation decisions are strongly influenced by how individuals pronounce their own names, e.g. Stanjura [stanjura] instead of [staɲura].
