The Terms of Noun Categories in Novaya Frantzuskaya grammatika by V. E. Teplov: Tradition and Translation Strategy

Summary/Abstract: The paper looks into the terminology used in the first Russian printed French grammar that was translated from German to Russian by V. Teplov and published in 1752. The research shows that the system of terms presented in the grammar book belongs to the tradition of the grammar books published in Russian in the second quarter of the XVIII century especially of the Latin grammar composed by V. Lebedev. At the same time the system of the grammatical terms of article turns out to be representative material which can demonstrate the ways of adaptation of grammar description for a Russian-speaking reader. In this case V. Teplov was obliged to apply to the grammar sources (by P. Restaut, C. Buffier or others) because the original German text didn’t focus on explanation of the grammatical class (of article) which was familiar to a German- -speaking reader.
