Summary/Abstract: The article focuses on the phenomenon of traditional costume competitions and interprets its importance for the local community and the contestants. The author analyses the issue of evaluating, selecting, and awarding the best traditional costumes. The research draws on the material of Slavonia, a region in Croatia with a constantly growing trend of traditional costume competitions. The author also emphasises the importance of the role of ethnologists as members of expert committees in the process. The study is based on ethnographic research, discourse analysis of documents related to the contests, and on the author’s personal experience, since she has participated in traditional costume competitions in different roles.
