Summary/Abstract: The role of the British parliament in the process of leaving the European Union—especially in invoking Article 50 of the Treaty on European Union—has created great political and legal controversy. The objective of this article is to systematise knowledge on the matter by examining what is and should be the function of Westminster, as well as of the British devolved parliaments, at the various stages of withdrawal from the EU. Given that it belongs to the competence of the UK parliament to ratify the withdrawal agreement, repeal the European Communities Act and adapt national legislation to institutional functioning outside the EU, an early and systematic parliamentary involvement in Brexit negotiations seems to be a political prerequisite.
