Summary/Abstract: This article aims to systematize the knowledge on photo-elicitation interview research technique and to present the possible functions of pictures in this technique. Terminology dilemmas, as well as theoretical and methodological assumptions of photo-elicitation interviews are the starting point of the article. Particular attention is paid to four features/processes specific for this research technique: engaging, structuring, reflexivity, imaginary. Then the possible sources of pictures used in photo-elicitation interviews are presented: from secondary sources, made by the researcher, owned by participants, made by participants. Differences in using material and digital pictures in interviews are also discussed. These considerations are extended by the author’s experiences from research projects, which used the photo-elicitation research technique. Four possible functions of pictures in interviews are described: explaining, alerting, contextualization, mediating.
