Summary/Abstract: Many variables are related to success in foreign language teaching and learning. School characteristics as well as pupils' individual traits are both analysed in this paradigm. Yet, research results are often ambiguous. The aim of the article is to review the research on the efectiveness of foreign language teaching and learning. Special attention is devoted to school-related characteristics, as research on this topic is often less accessible than on individual characteristics. The results of the analyses points to techaer pre- and in-service training as one of the essential factors enhancing educational effectiveness.
