Summary/Abstract: The article has been written in the style of an argumentative essay and is an attempt to consider the literary surveys in Bulgarian Literature Science which are related to the story as genre and reveal the inaccuracy of the term. The researched authors are presented in chronological order beginning with Ivanka Kovacheva, followed by Angel Tonov, Ivan Simeonov, Svetlana Stoicheva and finally Peter Stefanov. Then the article summarizes and clarifies the problematic issues concerning the theory. There are different opinions regarding the classification of the folk stories retold by literary means. The author tries to give an answer to the question: Do we have the reason to rank the story whose author is known, with the literary genres when the author has only taken dialect words and expressions, even being alienated from its folk source?
