Summary/Abstract: The article presents the results of a research, concentrated on the mechanisms of the arising modern mass culture in Bulgaria. The main accent is put on the competitions Miss Bulgaria and Miss Balkan, organized in 1929 by two rival newspapers „Zora” and „Utro”, reflecting in a different way – than before – the problem of the place of the women in the modern society. The ideas about women’s beauty and aesthetic are studied in the context of the ideologies of the modern nationalism. The modern market instruments, advertisements and the impact of mass media are discussed as key factors, forming mass imaginations about the woman’s body in the spaces of modern publicity
