Summary/Abstract: The article deals with a role of "Morskyie pomoinyie rasskazy" cycle within the diverse works of a Russian writer L. Petrushevskaya. Attention is drawn to the identification of analyzed stories' genre and to aspects which unite the cycle into a single genre framework. The aspects of symbolism and irony are particularly highlited. An idea of a littered sea, where all the actions are unconscious and inert, serves as a symbolic background of the cycle. Images of the marine inhabitants and their actions embody demonstrative allusions to the Post-Soviet times. Conclusions are drawn that the author portrays a specific dystopia reality by the image of the littered sea.
