Summary/Abstract: The data provided through this article demonstrate that the majority of employees in Albania work without the benefit of a collective contract and are under the beneficence of employers and the state: a negative example to the public sector as well as to joint ventures established with foreign capital. The experience of the global trade union movement indicates that employees’ freedoms and rights are not just given to them by employers but have to be won using all kinds of trade union action. A primary role in this is occupied by tripartism at all levels, collective agreements and a labour contract, as well as the need for governments to take into consideration a recognition of the trade union vision.
