Summary/Abstract: This paper considers the current trend of using the genre of essay, which has historically been considered as the most important one in printed publications, on television. Applying the methods of comparison and induction, it is revealed that the essay component is inherent in different types of media, both traditional and electronic. It is the core that unites them. The artistic means of expression, which are characteristic of the newspaper essay, transform under the conditions of television and acquire additional new opportunities with the help of image and sound (audiovisual media).
