Summary/Abstract: Over the last two years, the West has been watching Moldova with disappointment as this tiny country has gone from a role model of EU democratisation and modernisation to a de facto authoritarian oligarchy. Together with the worsening image of Moldova, the role of the country in terms of the policies of its key foreign partners began to change. The country has since become a tool in the hands of bigger geopolitical players.
