Summary/Abstract: Although it is the most common and frequent type of translation performed nowadays in the world, specialised translation, i.e. the translation of texts produced within or referring to a specialist field of knowledge or activity, has mostly been allotted a second-rate status within the discipline of translation studies. Seen as far less creative, noble, and glamorous than its traditional counterpart, i.e. literary translation, specialised translation has been associated with rather negative features, being directly or indirectly described as an automatic, restricted, and often tedious process. This article discusses some of the challenges that translators working with specialised texts are likely to face in their work, in an effort to show that specialised translation involves more than meets the eye and can be just as demanding as literary translation for those who perform it.
