Summary/Abstract: Modernization is considered in this paper in two senses: on the one hand, as updating following the experience of developed countries and in the framework of “past dependence”; on the other one, as reforming in accordance with the new requirements of social life. Correlation of the concept of modernization with the concepts of innovation and transformation is discovered. The main characteristics of modernization are described. The principal attention is given to the obstacles on the way of modernization in Russia, particularly in the following spheres: economic, scientific-technological, social, and political.
