Summary/Abstract: The paper shows that the term predstavlenie (representation/idea) in Russian psychology describes two different classes of psychological phenomena, either perceptual or mental. In turn, the concept representation is widely used in foreign cognitive psychology, being closely related to that in Russian psychology but still going beyond it. This creates confusion and complicates mutual understanding with English-speaking colleagues. Therefore, it has been suggested that mental representations should be distinguished from those of the perceptual type, since they result from the processing of different complexes of information in the psyche and consciousness, performing the function of structuring and explanation of the reality.
