Summary/Abstract: In 1989 Poland commenced the transition period in which the state-dominated socialist system was to be transformed into a free market economy adapting democratic principles. The reforms covered both political bodies, as well as structural change, including framework for legal and economic system. Poland became a precursor to change, which soon spread to other Central and Eastern Europe countries. The co-operative movement was treated in a particular way and the debate over the direction of these changes continues even today. This paper covers different approaches adapted to co-operative movement in transition economies and the effects these changes had on the current European co-operation structures.
