Summary/Abstract: In this article we analyse the peculiarities of chronotope in Laurence Sterne's novel “The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman”. Our research is focused on the final stage of the development of the 18th century English novel as considered from the viewpoint of the genre characteristics of the novel under study. We show that Sterne, having created the novel-dialogue and the novel-conversation, on the one hand, continued the European epic tradition, and, on the other hand, was the first who made the game of chronotopes an independent subject of artistic interpretation and understanding.
