Summary/Abstract: The article investigates the character, works and some facts from the private and public life of the first professor of Russian philology at Kazan University – G.N. Gorodchaninov. The research is based on the letters of Metropolitan Yevgeny (Bolkhovitinov) published in the journal of the Ministry of National Education in 1857. The letters contain unique information not so much about the author as about the recipient and help identify the degree of Yevgeny Bolkhovitinov’s influence on the formation of the professor’s scientific views and principles of teaching Russian philology.
