Summary/Abstract: This paper deals with problems and possibilities of the real-time visualization of mobile objects using geographic information systems (GIS), and discusses e-services with these possibilities. In order to visualize mobile objects in real time, we propose to use Google Earth software and XML-based Keyhole Markup Language (KML). The proposed mobile object tracking system Akis-GE architecture is presented. In the proposed system, the location of an object is determined using a GPS receiver or smart device with geo-location capabilities. The information about its location is transferred to the Akis-GE server via mobile Internet. The server can dynamically generate KML files that contain the information about changes in the object‘s location. The server answers to Google Earth client requests about updated positions, and the client displays the objects on the map. The moving of objects can also be animated later using the saved travel data of the requested time interval. The major advantage of the system is that it can be implemented without the use of expensive GIS software and digital maps, as Google Earth software with maps is free and worldwide accessible. This enables anyone to create applications and e-services that use Google Earth and Akis-GE architecture.
