Summary/Abstract: This article analyses a book of sketches and notes made by the artist Wincenty Sleńdziński, which is currently preserved at the Sleńdziński Gallery of the Białystok Municipal Museum. This source is unique in that along with sketches and drawings it contains interesting written material revealing Sleńdziński’s literary experiments, a previously unknown side of the artist’s personality. These include poems, vaudevilles, and thoughts on human existence. The scrapbook was filled during the period of the artist’s exile in Kniaginin (a town in the Nizhniy Novgorod province), therefore the drawings and compositional sketches it contains help revealing tendencies in his creative work in exile. Several pages dedicated to the description of his trip from Kniaginin to Kharkov, where Sleńdziński was allowed to stay for the rest of the exile period, illustrate a short but interesting period of his life. In presenting the source the author focuses on Sleńdziński’s creative period in Kniaginin.
