Summary/Abstract: The article analyzes collaborative consumption, the practice, which is new for Russian society, and – as part of the “sharing economy” – alternative to the ideals of consumer society. Methodological foundations of the research are grounded in the four principles of the sharing economy: “critical mass”, “idling capacity”, “belief in commons” and “trust between strangers”. Based on the interviews with participants of popular Internet communities for collaborative consumption in Russia, we discuss the contexts of the development of collaborative consumption, forms of organization, practices and motives of the participants to join the community. The interviews demonstrate that this is the idling capacity, not the intention to save money that drives the development of collaborative consumption in Russia. At the same time, collaborative consumption is seen as a “healthy alternative” to consumerism, and as a more efficient way of using the idling capacity of things and the resources of community.
