The designer’s creation in a puppet theater

Summary/Abstract: This article analyses problems that make a designer’s work in a puppet theater unique and exclusive. References used in the work include historical and theoretical material as well as issues of the contemporary Lithuanian puppet theater (mostly the stenography of the designer Julija Skuratova in the plays “Muzikinė dėžutė“, “Juodoji višta“ and “Senelės pasaka”). Quintessential problematic issues in the puppet theater include: an object’s capabilities regarding theatrical expression; relation between the designer, the puppet, and the actor; particularities of space; the relationship of the designer and the director; particularities of the sketch. The work aims to show the interactions between these issues and to provide some characteristic examples.In the puppet theater, the designer’s creation of the play’s environment has aspects of both freedom and restriction. As opposed to the drama theater, the materiality of the puppet here gives the designer the supremacy to create a world not bounded by a “live” actor’s specifications. On the other hand, puppet qualities such as size and the need for great lightning and excellent visibility necessitates the tendency to present puppet plays in chamber spaces.In a puppet play, the director is often even more dependent on the designer than in the drama theater because the puppet theater is dominated by the visual fundamentals provided by the artist. Sometimes directional basics are found in the designer’s creation. When the designer begins to direct, the greatest danger arises in the field of working with actors.The article is based on a bachelor thesis defended at the Lithuanian Music and Theater Academy in 2007 (advisor Audronė Girdzijauskaitė).
