Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the political exile of the well-known Lithuanian director and his work with the amateur theater troupe in the Samogitian theater. The text provides a comprehensive historical overview of the amateur theater activities in Telšiai starting with the old times, especially covering the period during which the “Kankliai” association was active (1916–1938). The repertoire of this association and issues regarding its acting and directing are investigated. A significant fact the establishment of the Samogitian Theater in 1942–is distinguished. R. Juknevičius worked there in the years 1946–1948. The director’s productions, repertoire trends and his diligent work with actors are analysed. His importance to this troupe, which took serious steps towards professional stage art, is outlined.
