Summary/Abstract: The paper examines the birth of children as a coming from another world, on the basis of world outlook, beliefs, notions and customs. The establishing of the child in this world, in culture, takes place through the baby's culinary treatment (salting, smearing with butter and egg, bathing-boiling), dressing and naming. The folk beliefs about the stork who brings children are considered. On the basis of the Serbian word for "stok" — roda — a connection is made with the Slav diety rod, known from Old-Russian texts (11th-12th century). Finally, an attempt is made to explain the nickname of the Bulgarian Tsar Ivailo-Lahana with the very popular belief that babies are born in cabbages, which is familiar to other nations as well.
