Summary/Abstract: The article scrutinizes the notion “Impero senza confini”(Empire without borders), its history and place within Italian public discourse. The expression appeared at the first time in the writings of Virgil and ever since is subjected to changes representing national characteristics of Italian people. However, central meaning laid down in Ancient Rome has not changed during history: the concept of universalism as cultural dominance over others. Gradually an expression turned into a notion. Impero senza confini is the last and the most modern variant of it, not limited by political or historical connotations. Considering sociopolitical peculiarities of modern era, the notion is used in a wide range of cases and is commonly recognized in Italian colloquial cultural environment.
