Expressing Estonian translative case in Latvian

Summary/Abstract: The aim of this paper is to analyse how Estonian translative case is expressed in the Latvian language. Estonian translative is a multifunctional case that expresses change, aim and time, but has not clear equivalent(s) in the Latvian language. The theoretical part of the paper overviews the functions of Estonian translative case, based on the works by Helle Metslang (2007), Kristina Pai (2001), Kazuto Matsumura (1996). The empirical part of the study analyses how Estonian translative case is expressed in Latvian according to the previously outlined functions. The examples used in the study are taken from two Estonian literary works and their translations into Latvian – Eno Raud Naksitrallid (1998 [1972]), translation into Latvian by Tamara Vilsone Naksitrallīši (2010 [1975]) and Andrus Kivirähk „Rehepapp ehk november“ (2000), translation into Latvian by Zane Balode Rijkuris jeb Novembris (2009). As Estonian translative is multifunctional, its Latvian equivalents are multiple too, depending on the function that translative expresses and the position in which it is in a sentence.
