Summary/Abstract: The article describes morphological and syntactic functions of Latvian auxiliary verbs, focusing on different ways of understanding auxiliary verbs and copulas, as well as on borderline cases of the both. In Latvian linguistics, auxiliary verbs are usually seen as the verbs used to form analytic verb forms, and copulas – as the verbs used in nominal and adverbial predicates. But there are also some different ways of interpretation available. Some authors do not recognise the existence of analytical verb forms at all, or stress the similarities between analytical verb forms and syntactic constructions, i. e., between auxiliary verbs and copulas. In the article, the problem is looked at mainly in theoretical terms. The mains conclusion is that the constructions of participles and auxiliary verbs are closely related both to morphology and syntax. Both the aspect of form and the aspect of meaning is highly important in language, therefore it is not possible, and – most likely – not needed to draw a strict border between morphological and syntactic functions of auxiliary verbs.
