A puppet in the theatre

Summary/Abstract: The article overviews and evaluates a puppet as a cultural phenomenon and the interpretation of the puppet theater as a variety of theatrical culture not on the stage of the puppet theater, but in drama, opera and ballet. A brief description of the puppet’s place in social and cultural history is presented; while analysing the development of the theater, certain aspects of the theme’s correlation with Lithuanian theater culture are accentuated: a puppet as a metaphor (Henrik Ibsen’s “The Doll House”), a puppet as a personage (Leo Delibes’ ballet “Coppelia”, Peter Tchaikovsky’s ballet “The Nutcracker”and others), a puppet as a character (Valentinas Masalskis’s performances “King Lear”, “The Return of Peer Gynt”, Giacomo Puccini’s opera “Madam Butterfly” staged in Vilnius), a puppet as a costume and a puppet as an element of directing and set-designing (directors Jonas Vaitkus, Gintaras Varnas, and others).
