Summary/Abstract: In this paper, we focus on the status of the relative pronouns and some adverbs in the raising analysis of Albanian restrictive relative clauses and in pied piping relatives. According to Kayne (1994), the relative pronouns are actually the original determiners of the relative ‘head’. Then it is the constituent [DP i/e cili/a (who) NP] that raises to Spec,CP. Basing on the Complementizer system proposed by Rizzi (1995), under our assumptions, in the Albanian complementizer system there are two positions available for relativization, namely Spec, ForceP and Spec,TopicP. In the contrast of //zaZ-relatives in the /zo-relatives, the relative determiner moves to the SpecTopic (the former is an external merge and the latter is an internal merge). As a consequence, e assume a to steps derivation: first the relative DP moves to the Spec of TopicP, then the NP “head” raises to Spec, ForceP.
