Summary/Abstract: This paper is an overview of the phonetic and grammatical elements shared by Aromanian, Romanian and Albanian, based on a Contemporary Grammar of the Aromanian dialects spoken in the districts of Gjirokastra, Delvina and Përmet, written by S. Poçi (2009). The publication of this first grammatical sketch of these dialects should be greeted as a step forward in the research of Aromanian dialects in Albania, which should hopefully be followed by other publications of the kind. The author’s purpose is, among other things, to show - by describing the common elements between Aromanian and Romanian - that the hypothesis set forth in the aforementioned work, according to which Aromanians are Latinized Greeks and their language is a Latinized form of Greek is scientifically groundless. To prove her point, the author compares the noun and verb systems of the two languages and draws conclusions vis-a-vis the elements they share. The grammatical and lexical affinities between Aromanian and Romanian are quite striking. On the other hand, the innovations noticeable in the Aromanian noun declension system have certainly occurred within that language and are comparable to parallel developments in other Romance languages. The analysis also points out the multiple ways in which Albanian has affected the Aromanian noun system and its verb system especially, due to these two peoples sharing the same geographical space for many centuries.
