Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this article is to analyse a number of counterfactual constructions extracted from both the Romanian written press and tv programmes. In our attempt to identify the authors’ intended meaning, we are going to use the tools provided by the conceptual integration theory. We will try to look closely at the impact that these ubiquitous constructions have on the audience and we will draw the attention towards the processes that lay at the basis of the counterfactual reasoning and towards the way journalists and political agents use this devise in order to persuade or manipulate the audience.
