Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the folk legends about the destruction of churches in the 1930-1950 period. The legendary genre dwelling on the destruction of churches is widespread in Russian folklore tradition and has a distinctive structure. Underlying the basis of the plots are real events, interpreted in the spirit of the traditional folk tales about the apostates and their punishment. The destroyers of the church were immediately punished, whereby a certain regularity could be perceived in the manner of punishment: it symbolically repeats the impact exerted by the destroyer onto the church or the religious objects (burning – a fire in the house of the sinner; destroying the bells – breaking of the head of the sacriligeous person and the like).
