Summary/Abstract: Burning down the towns of Kelcyre and Permet on the 5,h and 6th of July 1943, is considered to be one of the most cruel barbarities of the Italian occupation army. After the attack on Peza, the Albanian forces planned an attack on the Italian garrisons in Permet, Kuqar and Kelcyre, in order to neutralize them and to bring an end to the attack on Mallakaster. However, after five days of fighting in the three above mentioned places, the Italians broke the siege with the help of other forces which arrived from Berat and in the afternoon of 5th July they set fire to the town of Kelcyra. The next morning they set fire to Permet as well. Along with human loses, were burned down 137 stores, hundreds of offices and houses, among which 125 newly built houses in Varosh quarter. With regard to the attack against the Italian forces, there were a lot of discussions between the political groups iri the prefecture. Leaders of the partisan forces thought that blocking the entrance of Permet would force the Italian battalions to surrender within a short time. On the other hand, the nationalist forces thought that the Italian army was still strong, thus they should not hurry. They believed that they needed to plan and calculate everything before starting the attack.
