Summary/Abstract: The 2014 Scénická žatva (The Scenic Harvest), the 92nd edition of this annual competition showcasing the work of amateur theatre companies in Slovakia, presented a number of fundamental concerns worth reflecting upon. This festival once again highlighted the state of gridlock in the system of advancement in regional theatre, in specific events at a regional level and in the organization of regional amateur theatre. It also highlighted the state of stagnation in creativity and in the search for new forms of theatricality and the role of theatres in this area. Even though the festival programme was varied in terms of type and genre, the performances themselves were only of a mediocre standard. The audience was mostly treated to productions based on non-theatrical texts and poetically infused theatre with a dominance of movement and visual expression. There were fewer works which were socially engaging. The festival programme traditionally featured “authorial theatre” as well as theatrically interesting productions of plays by Samuel Beckett and Martin McDonagh.
