Summary/Abstract: How useful is the concept of the aura in film studies, given the debates on the spectral character of the filmic medium? This article comprises two parts. The first analyses the different meanings of aura in Walter Benjamin’s works, especially its ambiguity in relation to the invention of film. The second part examines the relationship between aura and photogénie as theorised by Jean Epstein.
