The Hymnographic Heritage of Constantine of Preslav

A Newly Discovered Triodion for the Eve of the Assumption

Summary/Abstract: Constantine of Preslav was one of the most important authors in Old Bulgarian ecclesiastical poetry. To the hitherto known hymnographic works, containing an acrostic of his name, is now added a triodion for the Eve of the Assumption. The triodion was discovered in two hand-written menaea for the month of August – in one of the 14th c., the property of the Paris National Library (Slav. 23) and in minaeon No. 536 of the National Library Cyril and Methodius in Sofia, a manuscript of the 16th с The preserved copies make it possible to read the author's name KON(C)TANT(H)N. The appearance of the work is considered in direct association with the joint literary activity of the Cyrillomethodian disciples which started in Bulgaria in 886. In the same handwritten minaea are preserved also copies of an Old Bulgarian canon glorifying the robe and belt of the Virgin Mary in which there is an aorostic with the name of another Cyrillomethodian disciple – KЛHMЕNT. After the hymnographic cycle for Christmas and Epiphany, this is a second example of the close literary co-operation and co-ordination of work between the two Old Bulgarian men of letters, Clement of Ohrid and Constantine of Preslav.
