Summary/Abstract: Latgale’s outlandish, Slavic qualities can be explained to a large degree by its highly distinct history. Unlike Riga, which was part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth for a mere 40 years, Latgale was ruled by Poland for over 200 years, right up to the partition of that country in 1772. This was long enough to leave imprints that are still detectable today.
