Summary/Abstract: This article analyses different approaches to the study of the Spanish subjunctive. We concentrate on Spanish monographs and larger series of articles published in the last twenty years and trace two main lines of investigation: works that postulate one central rule for the use of subjunctive and those that study its different uses separately. We compare them and point out a number of questions that still remain unresolved. We claim that works proposing a single value of the Spanish subjunctive often leave aside some problematic aspects and do not pay sufficient attention to the Indicative. Consequently, we analyse works on the subjunctive written by Czech linguists, offering, thus, a contrastive point of view on the topic.
