Summary/Abstract: The paper focuses on the diachronic analysis of the Pluperfect Simple in the Portuguese language. The principal objective of this study is to analyse the modo-temporal functions of the Pluperfect Simple in Old Portuguese, to compare its frequency and its use in the evolution of the Portuguese language and to detect in which period the Pluperfect Simple ceased being used in modal functions. The research is based on the linguistic corpus www.corpusdoportugues.org.
