About the cult complex of Western Basilica in Medieval Chersoneses—Cherson

Summary/Abstract: Western basilica was one of the most important religious complexes of the medieval Chersoneses—Cherson, which was Byzantine center of northern Black Sea coast. This complex formed at the end of 4th century, on the place of burial site of St. Vasiley, who was the first bishop of Chersoneses and has been linked with the memory of the first Christians. The chapel was built over the grave of this holy, later it was rebuilt into the church and next to this church appeared cross-shaped chapel. During 6-7th centuries this complex included large basilica with the baptistery on its north side. Eventually this baptistery was transformed into a memorial chapel - adapted for the burial of the local clergy. In 9th century to its south side was added a gallery which was ended as a memorial church. Ih the written sources this complex mentions as St Leonty House. This complex play an especial role in the religious life of the medieval town, it was the center of the minor pilgrimage. Its destruction associated with an earthquake in the 11th century. Significant part of the medieval city buildings was damaged by this earthquake.
