Summary/Abstract: Important libraries were set up in the 18th century, but the 19th century, mainly its second half, brought a remarkable growth in number of the libraries set up in Bihor. They were intermediaries between the book, lecture and readers, the people fond of books. They constituted reference points for the literary societies of Oradea and Beiuş and for the urban and rural teaching establishments. As new instruments of culturalization, these libraries provided the circulation of the book and received the information from the publications of the time, information that was extremely valuable and often unique. The library represented a dynamic space that met a major social need, that of information. Libraries were oriented towards the acquisition of books and lecture, mainly, Romanian. Even if at the beginning libraries were set up in schools, they would welcome the entire Romanian community of the locality where they functioned. The development of the libraries from Bihor followed the course of the history of the Romanian culture.
