Frequency of passive voice in Latvian and English scientific medical writing

Summary/Abstract: The research article aims at comparing the use of the passive voice in Latvian and English medical research articles. The main source of the research are Minton’s (2015) findings of the use of passive in English medical discourse. The Latvian medical discourse research is based on an unmarked medical scientific article corpus, containing 194 thousand words, which was manually searched for the passive forms using auxilary words tikt ‘to get’ and būt ‘to be’ as markers. The finndings suggest that Latvian medical discourse contains fewer instances of passive than English, nevertheless, it is present in all parts of the description of the scientifical apparatus and fulfills the same functions Minton (1995) discovered in his metaresearch.
