Summary/Abstract: In France, the subject of prostitution was a central problem in the nineteenth century and it was present in society throughout the century. Given the importance of this phenomenon, it appeared as the main theme in other important areas, this is the reason why the prostitution was a significant problem in literature, too. The writers were inspired by the social context and took it as a subject in their works. The authors have managed to create contexts and sketch an iconic image of the prostitute. Emile Zola's novel, Nana, is one of the most important writings that treat this theme in the nineteenth century. Novelist of the naturalist school, Zola agrees to reveal an uninhibited and provocative woman. From hysteria to prostitution, Nana is a model for the century, embodying the image of bourgeois society. To better understand the action of the novel, we specify the fact that Emile Zola would not have managed to achieve the novel without doing a careful research on the aspects of the civilization in the nineteenth century. Thus, Zola began a sociological survey in a society based on gallantry and seduction creating an original writing revealed by the character of Nana.
