Summary/Abstract: In feminist terms, Marx's philosophical conception of human labor can be read as the fundamental act of self-consciousness. According to Marx, the alienation of the laborer from the product of his work leads to psychical and material impoverishment under capitalist conditions. This philosophical view on bodily labor can be applied to the exploitation of female sexuality and the performance of domestic work depicted in The Awakening in order to employ a socialist critical perspective within the analysis of the feminist issues addressed in the novel.
