Summary/Abstract: The article analyzes the isolated vowels of one dialect of the Eastern Upper Lithuania, i. e. Svirkai: discuses their acoustic and articulation characteristics, their spectral indicators are compared to the quality parameters of isolated vowels of other dialects. In a fluent speaking language the realization of each sound is influenced by the phonetic environment (the laws of co-articulation), the specific situation of speaking, the tempo of speaking and other factors. An isolated vowel is a stationary part of sound, obtained by cutting a section of the length of 500 ms out of an artificially prolonged sound of the length of approximately 1 second. There is an opinion that the positional and other factors bring minimal influence on the said meta-phoneme, the formants of which remain virtually unchanged. In order to provide a more objective spectral characteristic of the vowels of the dialect, the isolated vowels are compared to the universal sound system, i. e. Daniel Jones’s cardinal vowels. 15 phonemes of the dialect of Svirkai are examined totally.
