Summary/Abstract: Our approach aims to reveal a resemblant outlook in Mateiu I. Caragialeřs and Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusařs novels, both belonging to the Baroque seen as an eternal frame of mind in world culture, as described by Eugenio dřOrs. The Romanian Old Court Libertines and the Sicilian Prince of Salina (nicknamed ŖIl Gatopardoŗ) share the same mentality and destiny on the background of their dying societies. Death and change are two of the main motifs which define the rich symbolism of these two novels. Keywords: novel, Baroque, death, transformation, symbol
