Summary/Abstract: Hungary has set itself an ambitious goal in the renewable energy sector, as it aims to achieve an RES share of 14.65 per cent of the national energy mix by 2020. The current regulatory environment does not allow for rapid expansion, as critical bottlenecks remain in the wind sector, while solar PV units are subject to an extra tax, which means Hungary will not be able to fully realize its solar potential. Positive changes are taking place, with both the national energy company MVM andforeign investors turning to RES, mostly in biomass and solar. As the Hungarian government wants to ensure the Paks II project remains economically viable, we can expect a cautious approach on RES subsidies, even though relying more ondomestically available RES sources could also reduce the Hungarian dependency on foreign – hydrocarbon – energy sources.
